About CEI

Intelligence Changes the Distance Between Opportunity and Action

CEI was founded on an idea I have come to believe more strongly with every decade of my career:

Success rarely begins when an opportunity appears. It begins much earlier, with the intelligence that allows you to see it coming.

I have spent more than four decades working at the intersection of media, technology, marketing, publishing, digital transformation and business development. I began my career in publishing in the 1980s, eventually serving as Editor-in-Chief, Executive Vice President and President of digital operations at duPont REGISTRY. I was fortunate to participate firsthand as traditional publishing collided with the emerging digital world and the Internet began fundamentally changing how information, audiences and businesses connected.

Since then, my work has crossed industries and technologies, from launching publications and digital ventures to advising major brands on search, social media, digital strategy and emerging technology. I have worked with organizations including Hooters, Humana, Kellogg’s, John Deere, Wells Fargo and others, as well as entrepreneurs and privately held companies where a single well-timed decision can change the trajectory of a business.

Across those experiences, one principle kept resurfacing:

The people who appear to be ahead of everyone else usually aren’t predicting the future. They are better prepared for it.

And preparedness begins with intelligence.

Seeing What Is Coming

Most business intelligence tells you what has already happened.

CEI is designed to look upstream.

We search for the events, relationships, decisions and seemingly disconnected data points that can indicate what is likely to happen next.

A permit is a data point.

A property acquisition is a data point.

A financing event, executive appointment, zoning application, hiring pattern, corporate filing, construction award or expansion announcement is another.

Individually, they may mean very little.

But businesses do not operate as collections of isolated facts. Events cause other events.

CEI looks for those relationships.

We ask what caused a particular signal to appear, what that event is likely to cause next, who will be affected, what organizations will become involved and where commercial needs are likely to emerge as a consequence.

That moves intelligence from observation into causality.

And causality gives us something extraordinarily valuable:

time.

Moving Farther Upstream

Imagine discovering a commercial project when companies begin requesting bids.

There may still be an opportunity.

But dozens of competitors can see it too.

Now move upstream.

Before the bid came the contractor.

Before the contractor came the development.

Before the development came financing, permitting, land acquisition, planning, engineering, demographic analysis or some other initiating event.

Every step upstream reduces the number of people paying attention.

That is where CEI wants to operate.

The farther upstream we can identify the causal chain, the earlier we can position a client for what may happen downstream.

Instead of asking only:

“Who needs what we sell?”

CEI asks:

“What is happening now that may cause someone to need what we sell next?”

That is a fundamentally different question.

The CEI Intelligence Model

The methodology behind CEI is proprietary.

It combines advanced AI research, open-source and commercial intelligence, human pattern recognition, iterative analysis and a process we have developed for connecting seemingly unrelated signals across multiple information environments.

We don’t simply accumulate data.

We interrogate relationships between data.

One signal produces another hypothesis. That hypothesis produces another search. A corporate relationship reveals an individual. An individual reveals another organization. A project reveals a supplier. A transaction reveals intent. A timeline reveals urgency.

The process continually moves outward and backward until we can reconstruct enough of the commercial landscape to understand not merely what is happening, but potentially why it is happening and what it may cause to happen next.

We then move forward again.

Organizations are mapped.

Decision structures are reconstructed.

Potential needs are identified.

Counterparties are matched.

Individual decision-makers are located.

Timing is assessed.

And when the intelligence supports it, a bespoke approach is designed.

We deliberately do not disclose every element of that methodology. The machinery beneath CEI is part of the product.

Human Judgment × Machine Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has radically changed what is possible.

But CEI is not an AI company masquerading as a business-development company.

AI is part of our intelligence infrastructure.

We use multiple analytical approaches to examine opportunities, challenge assumptions, discover relationships and pursue competing hypotheses. Machines can examine extraordinary amounts of information and uncover patterns at a scale that was impossible only a few years ago.

Human experience determines which patterns matter.

That combination is where CEI becomes powerful.

Machine-scale discovery. Human-scale judgment.

From Intelligence to Action

Ultimately, intelligence that never produces action is simply interesting information.

CEI exists to convert intelligence into commercial advantage.

That may mean identifying an opportunity earlier.

Finding a decision-maker competitors haven’t reached.

Understanding why a company may soon need a particular service.

Recognizing two organizations that should know one another.

Or discovering a chain of events far enough upstream that our client can arrive before the marketplace becomes crowded.

We are not trying to predict the future perfectly.

We are trying to see enough of it early enough to act intelligently.

That is the philosophy behind CEI.

Know earlier. Prepare sooner. Arrive first.

Moving Farther Upstream

The farther upstream we can identify the causal chain, the earlier we can position a client for what may happen downstream.

Put CEI to work for you now.

Stay in the loop with everything you need to know.
